5 Things I Learned While Looking for My Lost Sock (A Devotional)

Seek and you shall find…” — but not always in the dryer

This morning, I went on a wild adventure. My missing sock (the blue one with the little smiley faces) had vanished, again.

Cue the dramatic music and the investigative flashlight—I was determined to find it before the coffee got cold. Spoiler: I did not find it.

And then, as I stood in my laundry room, waving around a pair of tongs (don’t ask), I thought: “Wow, this is a little like faith, isn’t it?”

Let’s be honest. Life sometimes feels like a perpetual sock hunt:

You know it’s supposed to be there, you want things to match up, but sometimes, the pieces just…don’t.

(If you’ve never lost a sock, I can only assume you’re a higher being. Or you only wear flip-flops.)

1. Sometimes What’s Lost Isn’t Gone Forever—It’s Just Hiding Out

Jesus told stories about lost coins, lost sheep, and lost kids.

My sock isn’t a parable (unless it is?), but the point stands:

God sees all the “lost things” in our lives. He’s the expert at bringing stuff (and people, and hope) back from under the bed.

So, if you feel lost? You’re probably just in a weird corner, waiting to be found.

2. Patience is a Fruit of the Spirit… but not always in my laundry basket

I did not feel patient this morning. But in the Bible, patience isn’t about sighing loudly and tapping your foot—it’s about trusting the process, and maybe having a little laugh at yourself along the way.

3. Sometimes the Match You Want Isn’t the Match You Get

I found another blue sock. Different shade, different size.

You know what? I wore them both anyway.

Life rarely matches our expectations perfectly, but God’s grace means we can walk forward—even if our steps look a little goofy.

4. It’s Okay to Ask for Help

I asked my son. He was no help.

But asking for help isn’t weakness—it’s wisdom.

God wants us to lean on Him (and sometimes on each other) when we’re missing something vital.

Don’t go it alone—your missing “sock” (whatever it is) may show up faster if you let someone help you look.

5. Gratitude: Even for the Odd Socks

In the end, I gave up, laughed, and thanked God for the socks I do have, and the feet I get to put in them.

Life is made up of a thousand little losses and finds, mismatches and surprises.

Don’t wait for everything to be perfect to be grateful—there’s blessing in every odd pair.

Prayer for Today 🙏

Dear God,

Help me find what’s lost, to trust when things don’t match,

To laugh when the laundry piles up,

And to remember that nothing is truly missing to You.

Thank You for socks, for surprises,

And for loving me—mismatches and all.

Amen.
