Focus on how you want your system to be different and what you want to offer your target market in the end. You will not make millions by just having some Google Adsense to your site. These are just facts. So take the time to sit and determine your business model, your goals and how you want to be set apart from other platforms. The market is big enough to accommodate a lot of platforms that every owner can benefit from, the main element being that you just need to make sure you are not a cookie-cutter copy of everything else available online. So have fun and make your system so unique that everyone that uses it will forget about other old social networks and enjoy being on your system.
